CHAPTER 15

Jazz

I ENTER MY APARTMENT TO the sound of two male voices. A shirtless Zay is lounging on our teal sofa with his on-again, off-again ex, Rowan, who is caressing his thigh through nylon shorts.

“Hey, Baby Girl.” He grins. “I was expecting you over an hour ago.”

I toe off my sneakers, and stroll into the living room. “Kai stopped by the gym unexpectedly and we went out for coffee.”

That announcement snaps his eyebrows up to his dreadlocks.

“Hi, Rowan,” I acknowledge out of politeness. I didn’t like him from the moment we met, and I still don’t. He possesses an unconventional handsomeness, with features that shouldn’t work together, but create a unique look that has landed him modelling and acting gigs. But beyond his looks, he’s rude, and he proves it by responding with an insolent chin jerk.

I shoot Zay a glance that silently asks, “What are you doing?” and make my way towards my bedroom down the hall.

“Give me a sec,” I hear Zay tell Rowan. “I gotta talk to my girl.”

“I’m not waiting.”

“It’s like that?”

“Yeah, it is.”

Rowan has always had an issue with what he claims is Zay prioritizing our friendship over him, which really means he wants all the attention. But Zay isn’t having it.

“Bye then.”

“You’re such a dick.”

“Me?”

I lose the rest of their argument as I enter my bedroom. I toss my gym bag on the floor and head to the bathroom that I share with Zay. When I emerge from showering, wrapped in my pink fuzzy robe with a towel wound around my hair, Zay is waiting at the entrance to my room. He leans against the door jamb with his arms crossed over his chest.

“How was coffee with Kai?” he asks, his voice laced with disapproval.

“It was fine, and no big deal. He dropped by and asked. What was I supposed to say?”

“No. It’s not that difficult.”

“I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.”

“Then I guess you didn’t tell him you were with his brother last night?”

“I don’t owe Kai any explanations,” I say defensively.

“What about Leo?”

That shuts me up.

“You should have told him before sleeping with him.”

“I wouldn’t get on my high horse if I were you,” I say, pushing past him to get into my bedroom.

“Rowan?” he snorts.

“Yes, Rowan. What happened to our pact about only dating nice guys?”

“I’m not dating him. Rowan and I are over. He’s nothing but a self-centred ass-wipe.”

“You say that all the time.”

“Yeah, I know. But he gives the best head.”

I toss a pillow at him, and he ducks, laughing. “I’m easy, what can I say? It was just a hook-up. I don’t have feelings for Rowan anymore.”

“And your point is?” I ask, grabbing purple cheeky panties from the drawer.

“My point is, you have feelings for Leo. It’s not the same as my situation at all.” He becomes serious again. “So yeah, I will get on my high horse when I see you heading down a path where you might get hurt.”

“I’m not going to get hurt.”

“I saw you when Leo dropped you off this morning.
